Seven Miracles in the Gospel of John (Part 1)
MIRACLE #1 – John 2:1-11
This is the FIRST PUBLIC MIRACLE performed by the Lord Jesus Christ.
I. THE MARRIAGE (verses 1-2)
Verse 1 – “the third day” – reminder of the RESURRECTION – belief in the resurrection is absolutely NECESSARY for salvation – cf. Romans 10:9, 10
- “a marriage” – 2 days = 2000 years (cf. Hosea 6:2), then a MARRIAGE – Jesus Christ and the CHURCH – cf. Revelation 19:6-9
Verse 2 – Jesus and his disciples are called to the marriage
- Marriage customs in the Bible involved a FEAST – cf. Gen. 29:22, 23
II. MARY (JESUS’ MOTHER) (verses 3-5)
Verse 3 – If Mary is the mediatrix, then why can’t she handle this problem on her own? She goes to Jesus Christ because she KNOWS that He CAN do something about the situation.
- cf. Luke 11:27, 28
Verse 4 – Jesus always referred to Mary as “Woman” – see also John 19:26
- What is this “hour” that the Lord speaks of?
- cf. John 7:30
- cf. John 8:20
- cf. John 12:27
- Why does he mention something about “his hour” if she mentioned WINE?
- There is a relationship in the Bible between WINE and BLOOD
- cf. Genesis 49:11
- cf. Deuteronomy 32:14
- cf. Isaiah 49:26
- cf. Isaiah 63:3
- There is a relationship in the Bible between WINE and BLOOD
Verse 5 – A GOOD way to live: “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”
- Notice it is Mary giving the SOUND ADVICE!
- COMPARE Luke 6:46
III. THE MIRACLE (verses 6-11)
Verse 6 – SIX waterpots of STONE
- SIX – number of MAN
- STONE – just like the HEART of man – cf. Zechariah 7:12
- 1 firkin = 8 or 9 gallons
- 20-25 gallons per waterpot x 6 = 120-150 gallons
Verse 7 – the commands of Jesus Christ, no “hocus pocus” – just Him SPEAKING – His WORDS are powerful! (cf. John 6:66-68, 18:5, 6)
- What sort of WATER does Jesus Christ provide?
- cf. John 7:37-39
Verse 8 – Notice the commands going back to v. 7 – FILL – DRAW OUT – BEAR
- This is EXACTLY what the Lord wants to do with you and I
- Fill us with the Spirit
- Allow the Spirit to be poured OUT
- The benefit is for OTHERS (not US!)
Verses 9-11 – The ruler of the feast essentially told the bridegroom: “You have saved the best for last.”
- This FIRST public miracle of Jesus Christ was NOT the LAST!
