The Bible’s Unsung Heroes (Part 4)
A little known friend to the Apostle Paul was a man named Epaphroditus. He is
mentioned only two times in the scriptures, both in the book of Philippians (2:25, 4:18).
Paul referred to him as “my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier” (2:25).
These terms speak volumes of Epaphroditus’ value to Paul. To an individual believer,
many may be called “brother,” some may be referred to as “companion in labour,” but
only a few as “fellowsoldier.” It is obvious that this man was loyal to Paul, but much
more so to the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul finished Philippians chapter 2 explaining how
Epaphroditus was “sick nigh unto death” (v. 27) and that “for the work of Christ he was
nigh unto death, not regarding his life” (v. 29). It is one thing for an individual to be
willing to sacrifice on behalf of one’s country, but a far greater thing to be willing to
sacrifice on behalf of Jesus Christ. Rather than being concerned for himself,
Epaphroditus was more concerned with the well being of others (v. 26, 30). What a
shining example of the life that the Lord desires each of us to live! Next time you read
the book of Philippians, stop and remember the great benefit that Epaphroditus was to
Paul, but also be reminded that you too can be an Epaphroditus for the Lord as well.
